Leading the Action

 

When composing a shot, you have to think ahead: What is going to happen next? If you plan a dynamic scene, there needs to be enough room on the side of the frame towards which the action points, as in the example in images a - c.

In images d and e you expect something to appear in the empty space behind the main subject. This building up of expectations may well be used intentionally, but if nothing appears, the viewer may feel confused or frustrated. image e
